Turn off forum and chatrooms during exams
planned
Rose Morris-Wright
I've been giving open note exams during the pandemic, but asking students not to post questions or communicate with eachother during exams. I've just been turning the class forum off entirely during these times, but students have asked if they might be able to view past posts, but not make new ones during exams.

I agree this is a great feature for take-home exams, would love to see it implemented. This feature exists on other platforms and it is very useful to have a scheduled window where the course will be locked and unlocked.

Actually, it would be extremely useful to be able to temporarily prevent users from accessing the entire class. Particularly important during noninvigliated exams in the time of covid-19.

Hmm I see, so like a read-only mode for chatrooms and feed? Rose Morris-Wright

Duong Nguyen: Yes exactly. I'm not sure how relevant it will be post pandemic when we go back to giving exams in person, but if it's easy to make, I think it would be really useful. The entire math department at UCLA is giving their exams this way until the pandemic is over.

Rose Morris-Wright: That makes sense. We'll add it to our roadmap. Thank you for the suggestion!

Duong Nguyen: Hello! I like this request. I also wanted to request a related option to completely hide the entire course site (feed and chatrooms) during closed-book exams, but came across this post, which seems to indicate that this feature is already implemented. Could you point me to how to do this? Thanks!
(I usually archive my course site during exams, but I think this doesn't completely turn off the site. I have had to monitor who were online, and to either message students to leave or remove them from the student list (adding them back on later).)

Thanks for suggesting this Benjamin Goodrich -- makes total sense. I've added it to the roadmap
